How to price blinds by width and drop on Shopify

Updated · Trimsize

Short answer: made-to-measure blinds are usually priced from a supplier's table by width and drop, not by area. Paste that table into the product, one per fabric group. The customer enters their window's width and drop, the size rounds up to the next band, and the price is the cell where the two meet, plus extras like a motor or blackout lining. A Shopify Function charges that total at checkout.

Why blinds are priced by table

A roller blind's cost isn't just its area: a wider blind needs a stronger tube and bracket, a longer drop more fabric and a bigger roll. Suppliers price in bands, for example every 300 mm of width and drop, and send a table per fabric group. Retyping that as a formula loses the supplier's numbers; a table keeps them exact.

Variants can't hold it either: five widths, four drops and three fabric groups is already 60 prices to maintain by hand, and customers measure to the millimetre.

How a size table works

Each size in the table is the largest size of its band. A customer's size rounds up to the first band it fits. With these example prices for one fabric group, in millimetres:

Drop \ width (mm)600900120015001800
1200$140.64$162.96$185.28$207.60$229.92
1500$151.80$175.20$198.60$222.00$245.40
1800$162.96$187.44$211.92$236.40$260.88
2100$174.12$199.68$225.24$250.80$276.36

A blind 1000 mm wide with a 1650 mm drop rounds up to the 1200 width band and the 1800 drop band: $211.92. A blind exactly 900 × 1500 is on a band and costs $175.20. Sizes beyond the last band can't be ordered, so the largest blind you make is the table's largest cell.

Extras on top of the table

OrderWorkingTotal
1000 × 1650 mm, blackout lining$211.92 + 15%$243.71
1000 × 1650 mm, motorised$211.92 + $250.00$461.92
1000 × 1650 mm, motorised and blackout($211.92 + $250.00) + 15%$531.21

Fixed extras like a motor are added first, then percentages like a lining, so a lining priced as a percentage applies to the motorised price too. If your supplier charges the lining on the blind alone, price it per area instead. Control side (left or right) is a choice with no price.

Getting the supplier's table in

  1. Open the supplier's price list in Excel or Google Sheets.
  2. Select the table with its sizes: widths along the first row, drops down the first column, prices in between.
  3. In Trimsize, on the product's Pricing tab, choose the fabric group and click Paste from a spreadsheet.

Headings like 1501–1800 or Up to 1,800 read as the band's largest size, and prices can be written 1021.20, $1,021.20 or 1.021,20. A price of 0 isn't accepted, so a size your supplier doesn't make never sells for free. Full details: Price tables.

Set it up with Trimsize

  1. Install Trimsize and, under What do you make?, choose Blinds & curtains and your product. It opens with a price table ready to fill, in millimetres, with three fabric groups, a control side, motorising and blackout lining.
  2. Paste each fabric group's table and check a few sizes in the live preview.
  3. Set your extras' prices, and add any others: chain colour, bottom bar, cassette. See Add-ons.
  4. Show fabrics as swatches so customers pick by colour. See Tiles, cards and swatches.
  5. Add the block to the product page and place a test order.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding down. A 1000 mm blind belongs in the 1200 band, not the 900 band. Trimsize always rounds up.
  • Different bands per fabric. Paste every fabric group on the same widths and drops, so each size has a price in each group.
  • Leaving the largest band open. Customers can't order beyond your last band, which is what you want: set it to the largest blind you'll make.

Questions

Can customers enter their size in centimetres or inches?

The product has one size unit, such as millimetres, centimetres or inches, and the table's bands are in that unit. Choose the unit your customers measure in and your supplier's table uses.

How do I price different fabrics differently?

Make each fabric group a material with its own table. Customers pick the fabric next to the size, and the price comes from that fabric's table.

What happens when my supplier changes their prices?

Paste the new table over the old one. Prices stay with their sizes, and each fabric group can be updated on its own.

Can I sell curtains the same way?

Yes. Curtains priced by width and drop use a table too; curtains priced by fabric length can be sold by length instead.
