Artwork uploads

Let shoppers attach their print file, with a resolution check.

Turn on Artwork upload in Widget customization to let shoppers attach their print file to the item. With Required, they can't add the item to the cart without one.

Shoppers click the upload area under the price, or drop a file on it. It takes the theme's font and colors, and lists the files you take and the largest size, so shoppers know before they choose. Once the file is in, they see its name, type and size, and can replace or remove it.

Files

Under Files shoppers can upload, tick the types you take. Other files are refused.

TypesOn at first
Print-readyPDF, AI (Illustrator), EPS, SVGAll
ImagesPNG, JPEG, TIFF, WEBP, HEIC (iPhone photos)All but HEIC
Design filesPSD (Photoshop), CDR (CorelDRAW)Off
ArchivesZIPOff

With HEIC off, an iPhone sends its photos as JPEG, which every computer opens. Turn on PSD, CDR or ZIP only if you have the software to open them.

Largest file is up to 20 MB, Shopify's limit for a file; set a lower one if you like.

Shopify can't store PNG, JPEG, WEBP or HEIC images over 20 megapixels, so the product page refuses the ones it can measure and asks for a PDF or a smaller image. For prints larger than about 36 × 24 in, a PDF is the way to a sharp print.

Resolution check

For images the browser can open (PNG, JPEG and WEBP; TIFF and HEIC in some browsers), shoppers see the resolution at the size they entered:

  • 150 DPI or more: good for print.
  • 72 to 149 DPI: low, with 150 recommended.
  • Under 72 DPI: told it will print blurry.

They're also told if the file's shape doesn't match the item's, since it may be cropped or stretched. Vector files print sharp at any size. PSD, CDR and ZIP files get no note. These are warnings: shoppers can still order.

Where files go

Uploads are saved to your store's Content › Files. The file name shows on the cart line and the order, and the file is linked in the production queue and on the job ticket.

Unused files

Files that weren't ordered are deleted 30 days after upload, so abandoned uploads don't fill your Files. Trimsize needs order access (the Production page asks for it) to tell which files were ordered; without it, nothing is deleted.
