Cart and checkout
How the price reaches checkout, and what keeps it right.
The cart and the order show the item's details: Width, Height, Material, each add-on and the artwork file name, in the shopper's language: your words when you translate them, and Width, Height and Material in English and German, or in another language once you translate them as cart words. Checkout charges the calculated price per item using Shopify's own checkout functions: no hidden variants or extra products are created.
The lines checkout writes always show the sizes it priced. When an item's lines are in the shopper's words, Shopify's order page also shows a _Priced line with what checkout priced, in your words. Shoppers never see it. See what the order shows.
Up to 7 custom-size items per order
Shopify limits how much work a checkout function can do, so an order can include up to 7 custom-size lines. With 7 in the cart, the product page says so, and checkout stops an 8th. Shoppers can order more separately. Products without Trimsize pricing don't count.
The size check
Trimsize adds a checkout rule called Trimsize: size required, under Settings › Checkout › Checkout rules. It stops configured products that reach checkout without their size (for example when another app, a quick-add button or a cart link adds them), so they're never sold at the catalog price. The message tells the shopper which item to remove and add again from its product page.
You can turn the rule off, but configured products can then be bought without a size, at the catalog price. Shopify allows 25 active checkout rules per shop: if you already have 25, Trimsize can't add its rule, and Home tells you.
Checkout messages
| Shoppers see | Why |
|---|---|
| "…was added without its size" | The item didn't come from the Trimsize block |
| "…has a size, material or option that can't be ordered" | The pricing changed after it went in the cart, such as a renamed material |
| "…isn't at its calculated price" | Something else changed the line's price, usually another app |
| "Orders can include up to 7 custom-size items" | The cart has more than 7 |
See Troubleshooting for what to do about each.
If something goes wrong
- Products without Trimsize pricing always sell normally. Nothing Trimsize does can stop them.
- If the app can't be reached, a configured product's page says the price calculator couldn't load, and Add to cart stays off. No order goes through at the wrong price.
- If a line's price can't be confirmed at checkout, the size check stops that line with a message, rather than charging the catalog price.
Not supported
Shopify doesn't let apps change the price of a subscription (selling plan) line, so configured products can't be sold as subscriptions.
