Translations
Your words in every language your store publishes, on the product page and at checkout.
Translate the words you wrote for your products into each language your store publishes. A shopper who browses your store in French sees your materials, add-ons and choices in French on the product page, in the cart and at checkout, while your production pages keep your own words.
Before you start
- Publish the language in Shopify, under Settings › Languages. For your own words, Trimsize offers each published language other than your store's main one, and shows them only when your store publishes more than one. Cart words also include your main language when it isn't English or German. A store with one language that isn't English or German, such as Dutch, gets the Translations page for its cart words alone.
- Allow Trimsize to read your store's languages. If you installed Trimsize before translations came, Shopify asks you to approve this when you next open the app. Until then, the Translations page and tabs don't show, and your product pages work as before.
What you can translate
Every word you wrote that shoppers read on the product page:
- material names and descriptions;
- add-on names, and the placeholders of Text add-ons;
- choice names and descriptions;
- the size fields' hints and help lines, and your own error messages (see Size limits);
- the names of sizes in a list;
- rule descriptions, which shoppers read in the price breakdown.
An image without its own alt text is described by its translated name. The block's built-in words (its field labels, such as Width and Height, its buttons and its messages) come in English and German; in other languages they show in English. The size and material names in the cart are different: you can translate them, below.
Cart words. In the cart and at checkout, each item's size and material are named Width, Height, Length and Material, such as "Width: 72 in". Trimsize writes these in English and German itself. For any other language your store publishes, your main language included, translate them under Cart words: a product's or template's Translations tab lists the ones that pricing uses, and the Translations page lists all four.
One translation per word, for your whole store
Trimsize keeps one dictionary for your store. Translate "Gloss" into German once, and every product and template that uses "Gloss" shows "Glanz". Each row says where else the word is used, such as "Also on 14 products", so a change is never a surprise.
- A word is matched exactly, with its capitals: "Gloss" and "gloss" are two words. Spaces at either end don't count.
- Translations are kept apart from your pricing, so saving a template or a product never changes them, and checkout never reads them.
- When you rename a word, its new name needs translating; the old translation does no harm.
Translating a product or template
Open the product's pricing, or the template, and choose the Translations tab. It lists only the words that pricing uses, one row per word and one column per language. An empty cell is marked Not translated, and a count shows how far you are, such as "12 of 18 translated". Type the translations, then click Save translations.
Translating your whole store
The Translations page in Trimsize's menu lists every word your products and templates use. Choose Untranslated to see only what's left: the quickest way to translate a whole catalogue.
What shoppers see
- On the product page: your words in their language: material, add-on and choice names, size names, hints and help lines, the price breakdown's lines and your own error messages. A word you haven't translated shows as you wrote it. The block's built-in words come in English and German.
- In the cart and at checkout: each item's lines in their language, such as "Laminierung: Glanz": your words as you translated them, and the size and material names in English and German, or as you translated them under Cart words. So do the order confirmation and the order in Shopify.
- The price is the same in every language: translations change words, never prices.
Your production pages keep your words
The cart and checkout show the shopper's language, as far as you've translated your words, while the production queue, job tickets, material totals and the CSV show your own words, whatever language the shopper ordered in. Text a shopper typed into a Text add-on shows exactly as typed.
A shopper can edit the visible text of their cart line. What was priced never changes, and each place shows it this way:
- The lines checkout writes always show the sizes it priced. A line whose sizes were edited shows in your own words instead. The cart page itself shows the text as the shopper's cart holds it, so read sizes from the lines below, not from the cart.
- On Shopify's order page, an item whose lines are in the shopper's words also has a _Priced line: what checkout priced, in your words, such as "Width (mm): 500 · Height (mm): 500 · Material: Woodgrain · Lamination: Gloss". Shoppers never see it. Make the item from this line: the material and add-on lines above it are the shopper's words.
- The production queue, job tickets and CSV, on the Pro plan, rebuild each item from the size, material and add-ons checkout priced, not from the words on the line.
